Fight for Leisure Centre won!
After 20 years of campaigning for the Sefton East Parishes area of the Borough to have its own modern leisure
centre our Team is proud to say that we have finally won this long battle.
A new £8m+ Leisure Centre is to be built later this year behind Maghull Town Hall. It will include a swimming
pool, learner pool and fitness suite. Also Maghull Library will move there and we expect an exhibition space
to be provided for the Hornby Experience and for other similar exhibition purposes. The building will be the
Borough Council's but it will be linked to Maghull Town Hall which belongs to Maghull Town Council. The Liverpool
Road North Library site will most likely be sold off by Sefton Council and the present dated swimming pool
within the grounds of Deyes High School will also be taken out of use.
Funding will come from Sefton Borough Council who will pay for the major part of the project but Maghull Town
Council together with Lydiate, Melling and Sefton Parish Councils and the Trustees of the former Lydiate Voluntary
Youth Club have also pledged financial support for the construction. All running costs will be met by Sefton
Borough Council.
Sefton Council's Lib Dem Leader Tony Robertson says "Having campaigned, often as a lone political voice on
Sefton Council, to get this project off the blocks we Lib Dems are very happy that things are now moving
towards a 2008 construction date."
An impression of what the centre could look like is below. This is NOT the final design but simply an example
of how the KGV site could well look after construction is complete. Detailed plans have yet to be finalised.
The buildings on the right of this drawing are Maghull Town Hall and its Parks Maintenance Depot. The view you
see in this illustration is from a Hall Lane perspective.
